Day 1 - Arrival into Kolkata, India

Upon landing in Kolkata, you will be welcomed by one of our staff. They will assist you with your bags and then take you to your hotel where you can relax after your long journey and freshen up or take a nap if you desire.  After settling into your room, if you choose you can go out to explore Kolkata, which is the capital of West Bengal and as such is the main business and cultural center of the region.  There is much to see, particularly in the north district which is full of interesting bazaars and crowded alleyways.

Accommodations:  Peerless Inn

Day 2 – Kolkata to Khulna, Bangladesh

We will get up early to drive to the India/Bangladesh border where we will cross over to Benapole on the Bangladesh side and then meet up with our local naturalist guide, who will be with us throughout our trip through the Sundarbans.  We will then board our vehicles and drive through the beautiful countryside to Khulna, gateway to the Sundarbans and an important port city of Bangladesh.  In the evening we will take a walk through the local market to get a glimpse of the local street life before retiring for the day.

Accommodations:  City Inn Hotel

Day 3 – Khulna to Mongla

We will depart Khulna in the morning and proceed to Mongla which is where we will board our cruise vessel for our journey through the Sundarbans.  On our way to Mongla we will stop at Bagerhat to visit the Sixty Dome mosque, an impressive monument with an architectural style that strongly resembles other pre-mughal mosques of Bengal.  By afternoon, we will arrive at the port and meet the crew members along with our expert western guide and two local guides who have intimate knowledge of the mangrove forests that we will be passing through.  As the day draws to a close, we will set sail for the Sundarbans.

Accommodations:  Sundarbans Cruise Vessel

Meals Included:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Days 4-8 - Sundarbans Delta

We will spend the next five days in the Sundarbans wandering through the myriad of waterways and frequently disembarking our cruise vessel to row along the narrow canals in small boats.  As we go along, we will explore the delta looking for tracks and sign of the royal Bengal tiger on the sandy beaches situated along the edges of the mangrove forests.  If we are very fortunate, we may be able to get a sighting of one though they are very secretive and their camouflage blends in easily with their surroundings.

We will also take hikes on the dry land to look for tracks, sign, and sightings of many other fascinating creatures including leopard cats, fishing cats, jungle cats, wild boar, axis deer, foxes, macaques, mongoose, and scaly anteaters.  When we find animal trails, we will take the time to follow them to determine what they were doing as well as study other aspects of animal behavior that we encounter along the way.  At times we will pause to engage in some bird language exercises, learning how to decipher alarm calls that tell us where a tiger or other predator might be on the move.

While on the boats, we will also be keeping an eye out for salt crocodiles and dolphins in the waterways along with other marine life.  Your expert guides will also teach you about the local flora and the importance and many uses of the specialized plants that inhabit the mangrove forest ecosystem.  We will also take breaks during the heat of the day to meet with local napa palm tree collectors and hear their stories about encounters with tigers and their experiences of living in the wild.

Day 9 – Mongla to Kolkata

In the morning after breakfast we will leave the Sundarbans and then head back to the port city of Mongla, where we will disembark and say a final goodbye to our cruise vessel.  Once we are back on terra firma, we will board our vehicles and make the journey back crossing the Indian border again as we head back toward Kolkata, which will be our final destination for this trip.

We will spend the last day of our trip taking a tour of Kolkata and absorbing in its many sights, sounds, and delectable cuisine.  Starting in the morning, we will walk through the flower market and then pay a visit to Dalhousie square, which is flanked by magnificent structures in British colonial style. Later we will visit some Hindu temples and the Victoria memorial, one of the finest art museums in all of Asia constructed of marble and now housing a variety of sculptures, paintings, rare books, and arms.  Its highlights include masterpieces from Reuben, Rembrandt, Reynolds and Van Goyen.

In the afternoon we will visit Kumartuli, the only potter's town in India. Coming to life only a half century ago, this town of about 250 "kumhar" (makers of clay images) families began shipping figurines overseas to a handful of countries, primarily the U.K. and the U.S.  From here we will drive to the book bazaar, an eclectic area around Calcutta University where the sidewalks are stuffed with books from almost every genre imaginable.  We will take a mid-afternoon break at the wonderful Indian Coffee House, and then finish our day by visiting the Missionaries of Charity that was founded by Mother Teresa before riding a local tram back to your hotel.
